1801 Assessment Roll for the Town of Newburgh

ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT

The book which contains Newburgh's tax assessments for 1801 is damaged: several pages are missing between "M" and "R."

Furthermore, at some point it was apparently used by children playing school. Daniel and Helen Tooker's names appear, scribbled in the margins (and sometimes in open spaces mid-page) in different ink and different handwriting than the main document. These additions have been kept, but appear here in red type to minimize the confusion resulting from the fact that the original was often used as a model for writing practise. Marginal notes that appear to be part of the original appear in black, with an italicized note about their location on the written page. Original page breaks are marked with bars.

The Tax Rolls document is being made available despite these problems, because it is an invaluable record of who lived and owned property in The German Patent at the beginning of the nineteenth century. There is no index, because this relatively short list is already organized alphabetically, although it is not in strict order under each letter.

A photocopy of the original manuscript is available for inspection through the City Engineer's Office.
